Start your summer right with this free family-friendly event!

The 50-piece Nevada County Concert Band will present its free "It's About Time" concert on Sunday June 28 at 5:00pm, as the first in its annual three-part Pioneer Park Picnic & Pops concert series.

There's something here for everyone, " says conductor Cheryl Woldseth," with marches, jazz, folk songs, Broadway tunes, and soloists.  Audiences of all ages will find something they recognize, and may come away with new favorite songs too."

WHAT TO EXPECT

Tuba soloist Mark Meeker will perform the "Music of the Night," a beautiful ballad from the stage show "Phantom of the Opera."  A cornet trio will perform Leroy Anderson's ever-popular "Bugler's Holiday," and several numbers will feature the band's vocalist Sarah Pressler.  Plus a saxophone ensemble will perform Paul McCartney's "When I'm Sixty-Four."

If you like jazz, you'll love the selections from George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" (including the favorite melody "Summertime"), or a medley of Dave Brubeck tunes that favors five, seven, or nine beats per measure.

For march fans, there's the quirky "January February March" written by the 1960s' NBC Radio Symphony conductor Don Gillis.  Disney fans will recognize "A Night on Bald Mountain" from the film "Fantasia."

JOIN THE FUN

Come ready with a joke or story that relates to our theme “It’s About Time.”  You can also announce a birthday or anniversary.  Write it down, sign your name to it, and pass the message to Jim Kerr, our band’s Master of Ceremonies, during the concert.

A contributor will be chosen to be the band’s guest conductor for the band’s signature piece “1915 March.”

To finish off the concert, the band will perform a medley of television tunes that includes "The Ballad of Jed Clampett," "The Munsters," and "I Love Lucy."

Bring your picnic, lawn chairs, blankets, and enjoy the grassy park seating.  The vendors Top Dog (food, sodas) and Lazy Dog Confections (frozen treats) will be there too!
